About Us

Sogavi College of Technology Kumi is a practically oriented training institution located in kumi municipality, North division on plot 24-26 Ariko Road, 200 metres off Soroti Road, at the railway crossing. Regulated by ministry of education and sports - TVET department, sogavi-kumi has proven to be a springboard for development of practically competent artisans in numerous technical and vocational fields Our driving school is licensed by ministry of works and transport; we conduct training and process/renew/extend driving licences for our clients.

Driving
Is closely linked to automotive mechanics because a car should be tested after repair; it would be funny for a mechanic not have an idea of what the fault he repaired feels when the car is driven. The client could also deny any improvement since the mechanic has no idea of the difference. Apart from independent drivers, we have preferred to train mechanics that are drivers, thus making them ‘double edged’. Our driving school is licensed by ministry of works and transport so that we can train, process, extend and renew driving licenses for our clients for both manual and automatic transmission cars.  (Join after UCE or above 18 years)

Electrical Installation u0026amp; Maintenance
Has become more profitable and a necessary service due to the widespread use in rural settings as a result of modernization. We have not trained very many electricians but the few that have come through are a blessing to the community in provision of reputable services. Woodwork
Has been dwindling due to the rise of metallic and plastic products but the beauty of wooden products cannot be replaced! Since Joseph was a carpenter and ‘his son’ joined him for a while in that practice, we at sogavi believe that perhaps one of them should officiate the closure of what they left trending. The few wood workers who have insisted on quality are perfectly afloat. We have decided to blend wood work with welding and metal fabrication as they share materials, skills, tools, equipment and products; they complement each other and the trainees are double skilled. in Kumi municipality alone, the demand for plumbers is on the rise as water supply has been improved. Water-born toilets are the way to go in such a developing urban setting. Our trainees are most times trained in the field as the demand is yet higher than our output. While many uninformed people are lamenting over unemployment, some skilled persons are being overworked due to high demand for skilled labor. How did we get here?

Sogavi-kumi is result of the UNIDO (United nations industrial development organisation) ideology finding a fertile ground of attitude. It became more apparent when in December 2010, God permitted some unscrupulous persons to reduce to ash the 'Soroti garments' workshop that was along Gweri road in the then soroti municipality. In January 2011, sogavi-kumi built and inhabited our first structure on plot 24 Ariko road which is now Sogavi-kumi head office.​ Being an industrialist, my intention was to develop a garment industry in Kumi but serendipity befell​ us when Private Sector Foundation Uganda assigned me to provide skills training for youths in and around eastern Uganda​ under the​ Enterprise Skills Linkage programme in 2010 and 2011.​ Coincidentally, the Ugandan technical teachers for tailoring (as they were then called) had stagnated in their career development and we formed a consortium together with other institutions in Kampala to upgrade our teachers to Diploma level through in-service training.​ Eventually UBTEB together with NCDC asked such institutions​ to harmonise the various curricular to form the National Diploma in Fashion and Garment Design now examined by UBTEB,​ which sogavi-kumi was given (among others)​ to pilot.​
